METAL ROOF PANNELS WE INSTALL:

The seam is our bestselling and most cost effective standing seam metal roof system we have.

Collins Roofing and Sheet Metal is proud to offer metal roofing solutions on both residential and commercial properties. Metal roofing is the bread and butter of our business and has been since our inception. We are factory trained to offer enhanced warranties on some of the metal products we install. We are McElroy Metal Factory Trained Contractors.

Standing seam metal roofing is our bestselling product we offer. We are specialist in this product and manufacture our own standing seam panels and trims. The seam comes in two different metal thicknesses 26 gauge or the premium 24 gauge. The tight sealing seam is hand crimped by our installers, and can also have sealant applied in the seam before seaming to allow panel to be used on low slope applications down to a 2:12. With the additional seam height this panel can be installed on a solid deck or can span over open framing.

The Seam 26/24 is quickly becoming the standard bearer for quality in all metal roofing systems. You might also consider other additional products under the roofing system including performance enhancing insulation or venting options -a signature of Collins Roofing and Sheet Metal.

The 138T and 238T T-Seam system represents one of the most advanced standing seam metal roofing systems available, built to deliver unmatched weather tightness, strength, and longevity.

The 138T and 238T standing seam metal roofing systems are versatile panel profiles designed for a wide range of residential, commercial, and agricultural roofing applications. Collins Roofing and Sheet Metal manufactures these proprietary standing seam panels in-house, giving us full control over panel length, trim fabrication, and overall system quality. By producing the panels ourselves, we are able to roll continuous panels on site that run from ridge to eave whenever possible.

The 138T and 238T standing seam systems are engineered with several design features that improve weather resistance, serviceability, and installation flexibility. Each panel forms a T-Seam connection that includes a continuous factory-applied butyl cap, creating an exceptionally water-tight seam capable of going down to slopes of 1/4” : 12'! The panels also utilize a symmetrical seam design, meaning both sides of the panel are identical. This allows individual panels to be removed and reinstalled in the future if service or roof modifications are ever required, something many traditional standing seam profiles do not allow.

These panels are secured with a concealed clip system that keeps all fasteners protected beneath the roof surface while allowing the metal to expand and contract with temperature changes. Collins Roofing and Sheet Metal also utilizes two specialized clip options with built-in offset, allowing the system to be installed over existing roofing systems or to create space for airflow and ventilation beneath the panels. These features make the 138T and 238T systems adaptable to a wide range of roofing conditions while delivering long-term performance without exposed fasteners.

The 138T/238T is the standard bearer for quality in all metal roofing systems.

Metal shingles offer historic beauty and architectural grandeur with the durability and longevity of metal roofing.

Collins Roofing and Sheet Metal is proud to offer metal shingle roof installation on both residential and commercial customers. Our number one selling product in this category is the EDCO metal shingle. EDCO Roofing offers several different product lines including: Arrowline Shake, Arrowline Slate, which comes in solid or blended colors to add dimension, Generations Shake which make the shingle appear “aged”, and finally Infiniti Textured Shake to give the surface an abrasive non-shiny look. While we regularly display this product to customers, we have other metal shingle products as well.

The EDCO product comes in two different profiles to resemble a wood shake or a stone slate, without the maintenance required of those products and with all the benefits of a metal roof. The EDCO shingle utilizes state of the art painting systems that either make the shingle appear aged or varied color to add dimension. The Shingle is made locally in Hopkins, MN by Edco Products, a leader in aesthetically pleasing exterior building products.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The cost of a metal roof can vary depending on the product, installation requirements, and the size of your home. With every estimate, we provide several different roofing options at a variety of price points so you can choose the best solution for your budget and long-term goals.

In general, a high-quality metal roof costs about 2–3 times more than a traditional asphalt shingle roof upfront. However, metal roofing is considered an investment-grade roofing system because of its durability and longevity.

While an asphalt roof typically lasts 15–25 years, a professionally installed metal roof can last 40–80 years or more. That means over the lifetime of your home, you may need to replace an asphalt roof two or even three times, while a metal roof will only need to be installed once.

From a long-term roofing system perspective, metal roofing can actually be more cost-effective because it reduces future replacement costs, maintenance, and long-term labor expenses.

To help make a high-quality roof more accessible, we also offer flexible financing options so homeowners can invest in a durable, long-lasting metal roof at a monthly payment that fits their budget.

  • Short answer: No. A properly installed metal roof is not significantly louder than other roofing materials when it rains.

Most residential metal roofs are installed over solid roof decking, just like traditional asphalt shingles. In addition, homes typically have attic insulation and underlayment, which helps absorb sound and reduce noise transmission inside the house.

The belief that metal roofs are loud usually comes from buildings like barns, sheds, or older agricultural structures. In those cases, metal panels are often installed on purlins (horizontal framing members) without solid decking underneath. This leaves open space below the metal panels, allowing rain noise to echo and resonate, similar to how sound resonates inside a guitar.

When a metal roof is installed on solid decking with proper insulation, there is very little vibration and no open cavity for sound to amplify. As a result, the noise level inside the home during rain is very similar to an asphalt shingle roof.

In many modern installations, metal roofing systems also include sound-dampening underlayment, which can further reduce noise.

If you’re considering a metal roof and have questions about installation, durability, or cost, our team can help you choose the best roofing system for your home.

  • Short answer: Yes, a metal roof can often be installed over existing asphalt shingles. However, it must be done correctly to meet building codes and protect the longevity of the new roofing system.

    Building Code Considerations

Most building codes allow a maximum of two layers of roofing on a home. If your house already has two layers of shingles, the existing roofing will typically need to be removed before installing a new metal roof. This ensures the structure does not carry excessive weight and remains compliant with local regulations.

    Proper Separation Between Roofing Systems

A metal roof should not be installed directly on top of asphalt shingles without separation. Direct contact between the metal panels and shingles can cause abrasion or scarring on the underside of the metal, which may shorten the life of the roof. Because of this, many manufacturers will not honor warranties if metal roofing is installed directly over shingles without a proper barrier.

To prevent these issues, contractors typically create a separation layer between the old roof and the new metal roofing system. This can include:

    • High-quality roofing underlayment

    • Foam insulation boards

    • Wood purlins

    • Specialized metal roofing clips with built-in offsets

A Better Solution: Standing Seam Recover Systems

One of the best ways to install a metal roof over a single layer of shingles is with a standing seam metal roofing system designed for roof recovery.

For example, systems like the 138T standing seam roof can use specialized shingle recover clips that create approximately a ¾-inch air gap between the existing shingles and the new metal roof.

This air space provides several benefits:

    • Prevents abrasion between materials

    • Allows airflow beneath the metal panels

    • Helps reduce the risk of ice dam formation in winter

    • Improves energy efficiency by keeping the attic cooler in summer

    The Bottom Line

Installing a metal roof over existing shingles can be a safe and cost-effective option when there is only one layer of shingles and the system is installed with proper separation and ventilation.

A professional roofing inspection can determine whether your current roof structure is suitable for a metal roof overlay installation.

  • Rollforming is the process of taking large coils of steel or aluminum and forming them into finished metal roofing panels using specialized machines. Instead of shipping pre-made panels from a factory, the metal coil feeds through a series of precision rollers that gradually shape it into the exact roofing profile required for the project.

At Collins Roofing & Sheet Metal, we operate multiple rollforming machines capable of producing several different panel profiles. These range from metal board-and-batten siding and residential standing seam panels to heavy-duty structural standing seam systems designed for low-slope commercial roofs and long spans over open framing.

One of the biggest advantages of rollforming is panel length. Traditional shipping limits metal panels to what can fit on a semi-truck, but rollforming removes that restriction. Panels can be produced to the exact length needed for the building. In many cases we manufacture panels on site, and in some situations we can roll panels directly from the roof edge onto the roof itself. This allows us to produce continuous panels up to 350 feet long without seams.

On-site rollforming also keeps projects moving. If a panel is damaged or an additional panel is needed, we can simply roll another one immediately rather than waiting weeks for a factory order. This flexibility improves installation speed and reduces delays.

For customers, rollforming is more than just equipment. It represents a higher level of capability and commitment to metal roofing. Having the machines, expertise, and capacity to produce panels ourselves allows us to control quality, create exact panel lengths, and deliver a more efficient installation from start to finish.
